Salou has excellent airport connections with a number of major airlines flying into Barcelona Airport and Ryanair, Thomson Fly and other discount airlines flying into Reus Airport, which is just 15 mins by car (only 8kms away).
Salou's main beach of Playa Llevant is great for beach side bars and restaurants with stunning sea views. Playa Llevant stretches from the main fountain along to the port of Salou and it's promenade is one of the best in Spain and is perfect for leisurely evening strolls.
Along the promenade there are a number of fountains that have light and water shows, which are probably best seen after dark.
Salou is an ideal place to make yourself a base to explore Tarragona or the wonderful, vibrant city of Barcelona. The ancient Roman town of Tarragona still has some fantastic Roman remains and museums. There is a lovely cathedral (with Sunday flea market in its plaza and surrounding streets) and lots of shops, bars and restaurants. On Sundays there is also the general market at Bonavista (just outside Tarragona) and sells everything from clothes to livestock. It is said to be the third largest outdoor market in Europe.
The city of Barcelona is only just over one hour by train or car and it is a definite place to visit. To see the many works by Gaudi, take a tour around the Nou Camp home to Barcelona FC or simply to walk "Las Ramblas" and soak up the atmosphere. There is so much to see and do in the city and a great way to sightsee if you have a limited time is to take one of the tour buses. These are very reasonably priced (approx. 25€ per adult) have an audio complementary and offer unlimited on/off stops on one of three circular routes around Barcelona's tourist attractions.
A 30 minute trip inland from Salou and you are in spectacular countryside with stunning views and opportunites for some fantastic photographs. Village restaurants serve excellent local cuisine at prices well below that of the UK, a three course lunch/dinner with wine is approx. 15€ (or less). The region is also famous for Priorat wine, a close relation to the more well known Rioja but by some considered to be far better. So a trip around the Bodegas and local vineyards would make an interesting day out. For the more energetic there is walking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, horse riding or canoeing to name just a few things to do.
For the fishing enthusiasts, beach fishing is very popular, but for the course angler the River Ebro holds some magnificent specimens, most types of river fish can be caught including Carp, Zander and Barbel. But the Ebro is more famous for the big catfish with the record breaking 264lb one caught last year.
Whatever you may want from a holiday it can be found in or around Salou, why not come and see for yourselves?
